Hi-Desert Cultural Center Offers
Groves’ Cabin Theatre Encore Performance of
“On The Verge”
DUE TO SOLD-OUT PERFORMANCES, THE HI-DESERT CULTURAL CENTER AND THE GROVES CABIN THEATRE CREATE SPECIAL BONUS PERFORMANCE AT THE NEW BLAK BOX THEATRE
JOSHUA TREE, CA – What is an eggbeater doing in the middle of a jungle in 1888? Two theatres of the Morongo Basin have combined forces to answer that question one more time at a special bonus performance of “On The Verge (or The Geography of Yearning)” at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s Blak Box Theatre.
“On The Verge,” a comedy written by Eric Overmyer, was originally produced by the award-winning Groves Cabin Theatre and just finished a successful sold-out run. Jarrod Radnich, President of the Cultural Center said, “Groves Cabin Theatre offers a unique theatrical experience, being a wonderfully intimate 23-seat theatre. We have known that Groves traditionally sells-out after their first weekend and that they turn people away, so we thought it would be a great opportunity for us to combine our efforts for a special bonus night to expose more people to this fantastic production in our new theatre located behind the Playhouse.” The new Blak Box theatre features new lumbar supported chairs and a state-of-the-art light/sound system.
“On The Verge” is about three Victorian era ladies—Fanny Cranbury, Alexandra Cafuffle and Mary Baltimore—who go on safari through “Terra Incognita”, the last unexplored land on the globe. Trekking across jungles, swamps, frozen wastes, and dizzying heights, these intrepid feminists encounter high adventure and stupefying risks. But more is revealed along the way. Eventually, it becomes clear that they are also traveling forward through time into the future. On their journey, they meet a host of eccentric natives, including a baby yeti, a troll, a fortuneteller, and the owner of a swinging vacation resort. In the end, the ladies find that there are some voyages a person must take alone. One of the highlights of “On The Verge” is its lovingly quirky use of the English language, or as Fanny says, “If I must embrace the future, must I embrace bad grammar, too?”
This production of “On The Verge” is directed by Desert Theatre League award winning director Wendy Cohen; it stars Joy Groves as Mary, Vicki Montgomery as Fanny (both multiple DTL award winners), Nicole Sment as Alexandra, and John Zembo (playing 8 different roles) as everybody else!
The last showing of “On the Verge” will play for one night only on Friday evening, December 5, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. at the newly renovated Blak Box Theatre, located directly behind the historic Hi-Desert Playhouse on the highway in Joshua Tree. Tickets are $14 general admission and $12 seniors, students and military. To order tickets, call the Box Office at 366-3777 to talk to a “live” person, or order tickets online at www.hidesertculturalcenter.com using the new, easy to use Vendini ticketing system.
