Hilarious Comedy
about life in a small
TEXAS town
JUSTIN BLAKE AND HIS TROOP ARE BACK FOR ONE WEEKEND ONLY!
JOSHUA TREE, CA – Theater-goers will get a dose of small-town Texas in a hilarious yet touching play at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center. "Lone Star," by Louisiana playwright James McLure, is a 1978 tragic-comedy that gives us a glimpse into the vociferous but stunted lives of three backwater Texas good ol' boys as they ponder the meaning of life, their futures, their dreams and their women.
Roy, a brawny, macho-type who had once been a local high school hero, is back in town after a hitch in Vietnam. With the arrival of Cletis, the newlywed son of the local hardware store owner, the underpinnings of Roy's world begin to collapse as it gradually comes out that Ray, Ray’s brother, had slept with his brother's wife during his absence and, horror of horrors, has just demolished his cherished pink Thunderbird. Despite all, the high good humor of the play never lapses, and all ends as breezily and happily as it began. In all, you have the critical mass needed for an explosion of raunchy laughs and a few touching moments.
“Lone Star” is presented as a special engagement for two days only during the last weekend in February at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s Blak Box Theatre. Originally commissioned by the City of Rancho Mirage, this special performance is produced by the award-winning California Desert Regional Theatre and is part of the “Comedy Through The Ages” series, directed by Justin Blake. This production features three celebrated actors from the Low Desert and Los Angeles: Jake Cohen, Nolan Reynolds and Luke Rainey.
According to Blake, the play is unique because, although it is a comedy, it also features more serious themes. As a result, he says, “the play will leave you laughing and crying at the same time!” The play also deals with the main characters' struggles to live in the sometimes confining environment of a small town.
“Lone Star” plays Friday evening, February 27, 2009 at 8:00 p.m., and two shows on Saturday, February 28 at 2:00 p.m. matinee and 7:00 p.m. at the new Blak Box Theatre, located directly behind the historical Hi-Desert Playhouse at 61231 Hwy 62 in Joshua Tree, CA.
