"Crimes of the Heart" now playing at the Blak Box Theatre
DIRECTED BY DESERT THEATER LEAGUE “BEST DIRECTOR 2008”
JOSHUA TREE, CA – Meg MaGrath just left one, Lenny MaGrath never had one, and Babe MaGrath just shot one. Needless to say, the MaGrath sisters sure have a way with men at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s theatrical production of “Crimes of the Heart” playing April 3rd through the 19th.
Playwright Beth Henley won a Pulitzer Prize for her irreverent, warm-hearted portrayal of the three very different MaGrath sisters struggling to make sense of their lives. There is responsible Lenny, who has sacrificed herself to care for their ailing grandfather; carefree Meg, who left behind her family and lover to pursue a (failed) singing career; and the newly rebellious Babe, who faces prison for shooting her abusive husband. The trio's reunion in their hometown of Hazlehurst, Mississippi triggers a hilarious mix of conflicts, crises and revelations.
According to Director Rebecca Havely, who was just awarded the coveted Best Director 2008 from the Desert Theatre League, “The play is both hysterical and touching as we see each sister forced to face the consequences of the "crimes of the heart" that she has committed.”
Craig Knudsen, Vice-President of the theatre commented, “People are always surprised to see how we have configured the Blak Box theatre for each play. We like it to be different every time someone walks in!” He also hopes when people walk into the lobby, they will also notice the new fiber optic “star ceiling” in the lobby that features actual twinkling constellations.
“Crimes of the Heart” plays April 3, 2009 through April 19 at the newly renovated Blak Box Theatre, located directly behind the historical Hi-Desert Playhouse at 61231 Hwy 62 in Joshua Tree, CA.
